Optus announces $70 Unlimited 5G Home Broadband and a national roll-out of 5G

Optus have used a live 5G location in Canberra as the site to announce their first wave 5G roll-out plans which kick off almost immediately.

The plan is to have 1200 5G sites by March 2020, an aggressive roll-out which will see them neck and neck with Telstra as they battle for 5G supremacy.

Optus 5G is already live in two suburbs in Canberra and one in Sydney with 47 more sites in March this year covering some 60 odd suburbs.

This is not about phone calls and phone data, this is a play in the Home Broadband space as people make the choice to sign up to NBN or choose a wireless option.

Optus CEO Allen Lew was present at the launch in Canberra saying “This is an historic day for Optus as we begin our exciting 5G journey with the announcement of Optus’ 5G Home Broadband service,”

“We will have more 5G sites going live across Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Perth and Sydney over the coming months giving a select group of customers the chance to get their hands on our 5G Home Broadband devices in areas of selected suburbs.

“We will open the service up to more customers and more locations as more devices are released and our 5G cells continue to roll-out.”

And it wasn’t just the roll-out plans Optus announced today, as if to throw a serious shot across the bow of the NBN for home broadband, they’ve also announced pricing at $70 per month for unlimited data at speeds of 50Mbps or more.

And the network will be compatible when handsets become available in the future.

To get on board, you have to register an expression of interest. This will likely allow Optus to confirm coverage in your location to avoid disappointment.

To register your interest – head to www.optus.com.au/5G and enter your suburb to get started.

Customer trials start after March 2019. For the best chance to get into the list – check these suburb lists – if you live here – it’s looking good!
