Australia’s open-wheeler category the S5000’s will be boosted in Melbourne by not one but two F1 greats with Giancarlo Fisichella joining Rubens Barrichello on the grid for the Australian Grand Prix support race.

Fisichella won the 2005 F1 GP in Melbourne driving for Renault, and he’s well-liked around the F1 paddock.

Now 47, the three-time Grand Prix winner boasts a stellar career in F1 and post F1 and his addition to the S5000 race should cast a bigger spotlight on the formula over the Australian GP weekend.

It’s not his first return to Albert Park since leaving the F1 paddock, he came down in 2018 driving a Ferrari 458 GT3 in the Australian GT Championship.

S5000 organisers hope to see 16 cars on the grid the weekend after next.

The cars will take to the track for practice and qualifying on Thursday, followed by a race on each day following.
