NBN announces suburbs where almost a million homes will get a full fiber upgrade – Full Suburb Listing

The NBN has today revealed a long list of suburbs and towns right across Australia where over one million homes and businesses will have the option of upgrading to Fibre to the Premises from their existing Fibre to the Node connections.

This upgrade will enable speeds of up to 1 Gbps within around 18 months if home-owners, residents or business owners order plans in the higher speed tiers.

While the upgrade plan was announced some months ago, the actual location of this option within the NBN footprint hasn’t yet been known.

And with a million or more homes on the list, there will also be many who are not, and will need to wait for a future upgrade announcement. There are many more to be announced as part of the overall upgrade plan, thought there will be many that simply won’t fit into what NBN has planned – yet.

Most importantly, this is an on demand upgrade plan. If you live in an area under the plan, once it’s “enabled” you will be able to place an order with your ISP for a higher speed, which will put in place the wheels of motion to get someone out to roll the fibre into your home. That process has not yet started and some small scale trials will begin later this year.

There will also be upgrades similarly for customers in the FTTC footprint area too.

You cannot yet search your address to see if you’re part of this upgrade, that functionality will come later in the year – for now, we’ve published below the full list of suburbs announced thus far.

Stephen Rue, Chief Executive Officer at NBN Co, said “We’re very pleased to announce the latest list of suburbs and towns across Australia – from Byron Bay on the eastern tip of New South Wales to Yokine in Western Australia – that will ultimately see around 2 million FTTN premises become eligible to join our ever-expanding Fibre to the Premises footprint, on demand.

“We very deliberately rolled out the National Broadband Network at pace across Australia using a range of technologies to ensure we could provide access to high speed broadband services across Australia as quickly as possible.

“We are now well underway with the next long-planned phase of the network’s evolution and development to provide more customers with access to nbn’s highest wholesale speed tiers currently available. Today, approximately 3.5 million premises across Australia can access the nbn Home Ultrafast wholesale speed tier with wholesale download speeds of 500 Mbps to close to 1 Gbps, on demand.

“We are on track to achieve our goal of enabling around 8 million premises or up to 75 per cent of homes and businesses on the fixed line network to access nbn’s highest wholesale speed tiers, if they so choose, by 2023.”

Here’s the full list of suburbs eligible for the FTTN to FTTP upgrades by 2023.
