After the launch of the new Nest Doorbell (Battery) last year, there was buzz about a wired model – and now it’s been announced, though only for the US and Canada at this stage.

The new wired Nest Doorbell offers all the same great AI features we loved from the original battery model, including person, animal, vehicle and package detection, but adds in the option to access 24/7 continuous video recording.

The 24/7 recording allows you to access up to 10 days of 24/7 video with a Nest Aware subscription, but you can access up to three hours of event video history at no extra charge. Google says the camera will also automatically record an hour’s worth of important events to its local memory in the event of an internet outage.

The new wired Nest Doorbell has no on-board battery so it’s smaller than the battery model, allowing it to be placed onto narrower doorframes or tighter spaces.

It’s not just a new design though, with Google saying they’ve worked, fine-tuning the image and making updates to the image quality in all lighting conditions to ensure you get a ‘natural picture’. Google says they’ve also eliminated the ‘distorted fish-eye effect’ you normally see with smart cameras, as well as using HDR to capture details in shadow and brightly lit areas.

At this stage, Google has only announced availability in the US and Canada where it will sell for $179.99USD. Google has announced the doorbell in four colours in the US: Snow, Linen, Ash and Ivy, but we will likely only see the wired Nest Doorbell in a single colour if it launches here.

We’ve reached out to Google Australia to see if there’s word on a launch here, so stay tuned.
