Boost Mobile research indicates 78% of Aussies have at least one unused smartphone in their home, and most of them are open to trading in or recycling them.
However, the majority see the lack of perceived value and convenience being the stumbling blocks to actually getting off their bum and getting cash for their older phones.
The Boost Mobile Trade-In app is a gamechanger, offering on-device tests to verify the condition of your phone and giving you an instant valuation.

I grabbed my wife’s old iPhone 8 Plus, 64GB and it had a maximum value of $165.
After I entered the IMEI number (found in your phone’s settings), the ap then commenced a range of tests. They included
- Screen accuracy test: where i was asked to touch a target on the screen
- Touchscreen test: Where i had to tap or slide my finger across all areas of the screen
- Pixel test: A tough one, used to find the accuracy of the pixels, you need to tap on 3 white spots on an orange screen
- Phone Buttons check: check that buttons work by pressing them all on command
- Microphone check: speak and listen to your voice to see if it sounds clear
- Battery Drain Test: torch turns on and phone vibrates for 30 seconds to see by how much it drains the battery
The only really subjective part of the test is what “condition” your phone is in. You have the choice of Good, Poor or Broken.
Once you confirm this, you get a value on the screen. In my case – the full $165.
I did another test where I purposely failed the pixel and screen touch tests and the value was just $50.

The process once you have a valuation is pretty simple. You need to sign in for an account, then you get an Australia Post label, and you can ship it off for Free to Boost.
Once your phone is received and the condition is confirmed, you are paid into your nominated bank account or PayPal. This normally happens within 24 hours of the phone reaching the Boost Mobile trade-in warehouse.
