Meet the AI-powered pocket companion, the Rabbit R1

There’s no shortage of products infused with AI smarts at CES this year, one particular device which took my eye was the Rabbit R1.

The Rabbit R1 is a handheld AI powered pocket companion, which while it’s not yet ready to replace your phone, it could one day.

The friendly, and colourful looking Rabbit R1, which is designed in collaboration with company Teenage engineering, includes a 2.88” touch display and is powered by a Mediatek processor with 4GB RAM and 128GB of storage. The unit has Wifi, but does require an independent phone plan/SIM card.

The device includes a camera that can rotate 360-degrees and comes with a scroll wheel for navigation, and a push to talk button that lets you speak with the device’s built-in assistant.

The Rabbit R1 runs ‘Rabbit OS’. The AI is based on a ‘Large Action Model’, with the idea that the AI will respond to actions – letting the AI access websites and apps and figuring out the actions needed to complete tasks you assign it, effectively doing away with the need for developers to add support for Rabbit OS independently. While performing tasks, the AI will come back to you to confirm decisions – like spending money – and you then confirm or deny via the touch display.

The Rabbit R1 will sell for $199 USD – but there’s no option to ship to Australia just yet. The Rabbit R1 has currently sold out its initial 10,000 unit first run and is taking orders for their second run which is due April/May this year.
