Automotive industry sales data – gathered from car companies, annual reports and other analysis – has shown Japanese giant Toyota led global vehicle sales in 2023.
It means Toyota has topped the global sales charts for nine of the past 10 years (after Volkswagen briefly overtook it in 2020 amid production slowdowns triggered by the global coronavirus pandemic).
There are several ways to calculate global new-car sales data – by automotive group (several brands under one umbrella) or according to the badge on the front of the car.
Our first list ranks new-car sales according to the badge on the vehicle.
Our second list ranks new-car sales according to automotive conglomerates and partnerships.
For example, when the data is counted according to each automotive group, Toyota sales also include luxury division Lexus and small-car specialist Daihatsu.
Volkswagen Group sales also include Audi, Skoda, Seat, Cupra, Porsche and Lamborghini.
The jointly-owned Hyundai-Kia group could also be counted as one.
Stellantis is the umbrella name for brands such as Chrysler, Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Peugeot-Citroen, and Opel-Vauxhall.
However, when the data is crunched according to the badge on the front of the vehicle, this is how the World’s Top 40 automotive brands were ranked in 2023.
