If you thought electric bikes and scooters were cool, wait until you see what AtmosGear has brought to CES this year. Their electric skates have are what every 90’s kid imagined the future to be like. These aren’t just rollerblades with a motor slapped on. Atmosgear has created what they’re calling the world’s smallest and most powerful motor, hidden inside a 110mm wheel. Interestingly, it’s only the middle wheel that is powered, which means you can still pull off your usual skating moves. At just 800g heavier than regular rollerblades, these won’t feel like your feet are in cement blocks.

These skates can zip along at 25km/h, which is going to be plenty quick enough for getting around town. With a range of 20km on a single charge, you could theoretically skate your way across the entire city. The clever regenerative feature helps recharge the battery while you skate, adding about 15% more range.

Now, it would be remiss of me not to caution anyone using these unless they are competent skater beforehand. With the ability to climb a 20 degree slope is hugely convenient, the problems could arise when you come down the other side! I’m not going to pretend to know all there is about roller blades, but they are compatible with 165mm, 195mm, UFS and Trinity mounts.

The motorised wheel comes with 90A hardness rubber (which I’m told is pretty durable), and they’ve made it replaceable for when you inevitably wear it down.

Australian pricing and availability hasn’t been announced yet but if you do get your hands on one, remember to wear your protective gear.
