The Acer Predator X39 OLED gaming monitor is its new OLED gaming monitor, designed for high performance while creating a fully immersive experience.

I’m a big fan of big gaming monitors.  My usual monitor is a 38-inch gaming monitor and my pre-tax deduction spend is set to be a 45-inch OLED gaming monitor, so it did not take long to say yes to checking out the new Predator X39 monitor from Acer.

The Predator X39 OLED arrives with some impressive specs, including a steep 800R curvature, a refresh rate of up to 240Hz, a fast 0.01ms response time, a 3440 x 1440 UWQHD resolution, support for 90W PD charging, 10-bit colour depth, and a DCI-P3 of 99% wide colour gamut.

Read on to hear my thoughts on the new Predator OLED X39 from Acer.

Design + hardware

The X39’s design is good but lacks the polish of some of the more premium gaming monitors I have tested recently. However, this monitor is approximately half the price of the more premium one I tested last year, so I don’t have any issues with the build.

Although it lacks the polish it is still a premium finish and feel although it is very minimalistic.  There are no over-the-top LED lights, well, no LED lights full stop – and I’m here for it.  Why do you even need gaming RGB lights on the BACK of a monitor?

The 800R curvature is the same as that on the LG UltraGear monitor I reviewed last year so I am used to it.  It really does make the gaming experience a lot more immersive but may take some getting used to for some people.

The monitor’s stand is a wide forked stand, and with such a big monitor, these long, wide feet of the stand are needed to establish it properly.   The front legs of the stand seem to follow the course of the monitor laterally so, although they seem obtrusive, they don’t stick up much further than the display.   The stand supports tilt, rotation, and  height adjustment to help you get it in the perfect position for added comfort during your gaming sessions.

Of course, the large legs on the stand won’t be a problem for you if you mount it instead – yes it supports VESA mounting.

Connectivity

The connectivity options for the Predator X39 OLED sit at the back, underneath the thick addition to the monitor.  The options are good, and more than you would need for most use cases.

There are two HDMI 2.1 ports, two DisplayPort 2.1 connections, a USB-C PD port offering 90W charging, a USB-B upstream connection, a secondary USB-C, three USB-A ports, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Phew.

Also included is a built-in KVM switch, which allows you to share gaming peripherals with two different connected devices. For some reason, this KVM switch does not have manual control; instead, it performs automatically for you.

Personally I would have liked a Thunderbolt port onboard but there are very very few gaming monitors that sport these so it’s not a huge loss or miss.

OSD

The OSD is controlled using the joystick underneath the display, as so many do, and gives you the option to change all your usual gaming settings such as brightness, resolution, and refresh rate along with advanced colour control, which most of us will never touch.

The panel did ask me to perform a pixel refresh every few hours to help maintain its health for longer. It is designed to prevent burn-in, so you may as well do it. Interestingly, I can’t remember other OLED monitors asking me to do this in the past.

Panel and Picture quality

Although at first look on paper the resolution on the Predator X39 OLED sounds great but when you are thinking it’s a 39-inch display, a 2K resolution results in a PPI of just 95 PPI, which is not great.

The difference in how crisp the text appears is subtle with it not quite having the sharpness of smaller 2K or bigger 4K monitors but is it enough to dissuade me from using it?  No but if I am using a monitor primarily for work I would expect and hope it to look better than this.

For long sessions of productivity-type work you may need to step away for a bit to allow your eyes to rest.  This is being super picky though, and yes we do look over everything like this when reviewing monitors but if you were looking for a super crisp monitor for creative editing etc you probably should look elsewhere.

Gaming is where this monitor is at though, and for gaming you really do not have any blurring or issues.

Performance

I ran the Predator X39 OLED through my usual gauntlet of games, including a few FPS games, and it performed admirably.  The high refresh rate and response time gave me an enjoyable, smooth, flowing, immersive gaming experience.  I really love the OLED look on a gaming monitor –  those deep blacks and bright colours just pop and make the game much more pleasurable.

The games had no tearing, stuttering, or ghosting, with graphics incredibly sharp, showing that although productivity may not be perfect, gaming is still great.

Final thoughts

The Acer Predator X39 OLED is a great gaming monitor. Thanks to its big, bright, vivid display and 800R curvature, it delivers an immersive gaming experience. As a true gaming monitor, it excels but is not ideal for productivity. It can certainly make do as a productivity monitor, but if that is what you use your monitor for most, you may be better off looking elsewhere.

If you are looking for an immersive gaming monitor with all the specs you need and want in a gaming monitor then you should definitely check out the Predator X39 OLED from Acer.

The Acer Predator X39 OLED is available now at Acer’s online store and at all good PC stores for RRP $1,699.
