BREAKING: Qantas suffers serious data breach – millions of customer records at risk

Qantas has this morning confirmed that they have been the victim of a Cyber Incident which may have exposed the details of up to six million customers.

The incident occurred in one of its contact centres where unusual activity was detected on Monday within a third party customer database platform used by the contact centre.

Qantas say they contained the system, but that there are 6 million customer records on that platform and while the full impact of the breach is not yet known, Qantas say they “expect it will be significant”

Importantly, No financial details are included in the data that has been exposed, nor are any passwords.

However, Names, Emails, Phones numbers, Birthdate and Frequent Flyer info is, and thus, the real risk from here are Scammers, contacting people by phone, sms or email and tricking them into thinking they are communicating with Qantas.

Qantas Group Chief Executive Officer Vanessa Hudson says “We sincerely apologise to our customers and we recognise the uncertainty this will cause. Our customers trust us with their personal information and we take that responsibility seriously.

“We are contacting our customers today and our focus is on providing them with the necessary support.

“We are working closely with the Federal Government’s National Cyber Security Coordinator, the Australian Cyber Security Centre and independent specialised cyber security experts.”

All communication from Qantas should be double checked, never click a link in a text or email from Qantas, use the Qantas website or App to validate any concerns about travel plans that may be communicated to you.

Qantas formal communication can be found here, and the company will be contacting customers throughout today.
