Review: The Moment SuperCage – smartphone mount with Integrated USB-C Hub

If you’re not a content creator using a smartphone to capture raw LOG video, or using a tripod for your smartphone while capturing audio then this isn’t for you. The new Moment SuperCage might be a super niche product but boy oh boy does it tick some boxes.

Now to be clear, I’m not out filming long cinematic sequences in 4K ProRes LOG format. So while I know this is made to suit such creators, I’m a live cross kinda guy and this is my new absolute top pick.

Moment have made a range of similar products, including a magsafe attach phone cage for iPhone, but this one is legitimately pro level.

Here’s my use case, for context. During a Live TV cross, I use an iPhone, and need a microphone and headphones attached, as well as using portable lights in most circumstances.

For the most part, I would use a USB-C to 3.5mm dongle, then an audio splitter cable which splits that 3.5mm out into two female 3.5mm plugs one for input (mic) one for output (headphones).

And then I’d attach my in-ear monitor to the headphone, and a wireless microphone receiver to the input.

Moment have taken that to the next level with the SuperCage by integrating a full USB-C Hub into the cage.

A USB-C cable from the phone into the hub then allows you to connect a USB device for data, another USB-C for power, seperate microphone and headphones via 3.5mm sockets and a full sized SD-Card slot.

The phone clamp itself is expandable by lifting and self clamps down on your smartphone.

Included with the Moment SuperCage is a short USB-C cable capable of 240W power, 8K video and 40Gbps data speeds. To be honest, that cable is my only gripe with this product – it’s so rigid that it frankly doesn’t fit perfectly well.

Perhaps the most genius part of this whole device is the ARCA rail sized base to this Moment SuperCage. What that means is you don’t need to attach a tripod plate to the cage, the cage simply slips into the tripod head right out of the box.

At $379.95 you might argue this is a huge price on such a product, but with integrated cable routing, a bunch of 3/8ths screw points all around it (which I use to attach lights), this isn’t for home movies – this is for working videographers and creators who will see the benefit right out of the box.

Farewell to my SmallRig, Rode and other simple tripod smartphone mounts, the new King is the Moment SuperCage.
