The name Cambridge Analytica meant nothing to Australians on Facebook until we found out that this data harvesting company had been using Facebook apps to scrape our information and sell it to third parties in the 2010’s – but did you know you could be eligible for cash from Facebook as a result of a court case settlement here in Australia?

The Office of The Information Commissioner settled a court case against Meta late last year, and as part of that they obtained what’s called an “enforceable undertaking”, which included a massive $50 million payout to Australian users.

How do you know you’re entitled to the Facebook payout?

Well the criteria for being a part of the payout are really quite simple.

Did you:

  • hold a Facebook account between 2 November 2013 and 17 December 2015? and;
  • were in Australia for more than 30 days during that period, and
  • either installed the Life app or were Facebook friends with someone who did.

I think the answer to the first two questions is pretty easy to answer for each of us.

If you’re like me, and there’s no record, you can head into the case and try to prove your involvement, but it’s a whole lot easier if Facebook tells you that you or someone you knew did install that app called “This is Your Digital Life“
