Tune your Algorithm on Instagram Reels – now available in Australia

A little while ago Instagram announced a new feature but kept it for the USA not the rest of the world, and now, the ability to tweak and tune your algorithm is available to Australian users of Instagram.

The idea here is simple, Instagram has this view of what it thinks you want to watch. Based on that view, you see certain videos, this is what we call the algorithm.

But sometimes, things go a little far down one rabbit hole or another, so the ability to fine tune things could be a game changer for your screen time.

And it’s really quite simple.

Head to REELS on Instagram, and on any reel – there’s a set of “settings” sliders in the top right of the screen. Tip: if they aren’t there on a video, swipe up and down again and it will show up – it tends to show for the first few videos then disappear, but comes back if you cycle back and forth through your reels.

Once you’re in there, you’ll see an AI generated phrase which describes what Instagram has been feeding you recently.

And underneath, the chance to add or remove categories of interest.

Importantly, you can also choose to see less of something specific

I’ve chosen to see less of Influencers and less AI.

Now that might work against me, because I do have an interest in the “world of AI” but I have very little interest in AI generated content (AI SLOP), and my request to see less “AI CONTENT” was shortened to just “AI” so we’ll see how that goes.

Give it a go, might be a nice refreshing way to tune things up on your feed for 2026.
