Google kicked off their annual I/O developer conference this morning, with a packed keynote that talked about the forthcoming new features with Gemini at the forefront.
The updates start with Google introducing Gemini 3.5, their latest family of models with Gemini 3.5 Flash the first to become available, for free, with the paid Gemini 3.5 Pro model launching next month.
The underpinnings of Gemini on devices will see the benefit of Gemini 3.5 Flash immediately, with the model powering the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search globally.
When using the Gemini app, you’ll be able to see the new ‘Neural Expressive’ design language Google has announced which mimics the Material Expressive 3 design language introduced in Android, adding fluid animations, vibrant colors, new typography and haptic feedback to the Gemini app.
A part of the new Neural Expressive design language is a redesign of the Gemini interface. Google says they’re removing the distinction between Gemini Live conversations and Gemini so you can switch back and forth between without missing a beat.
A part of this is redesign, Gemini will also stop presenting you with a wall of text. Instead opting for a richer response which includes ‘imagery, interactive timelines, narrated videos and dynamic graphics’.
One of the new features being introduced in Gemini is Gemini Omni, a model which takes your prompts, be it text, images or video and creates ‘high-quality video output’.
Gemini Omni isn’t available on the free Gemini tier though, you’ll need to be using the paid Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra subscription to access.
Having all this AI power means you can now get an overall summary of your day with an AI-Agent delivering a ‘Daily Brief’.
We saw Google launch a ‘Daily Hub’ with the Pixel 10 series, but it sort of went away – now it’s back, renamed as Daily Brief, and delivers all sorts of information – if you have the right subscription tier.
Available to users in the US (initially) with a Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra subscription, Daily Brief will gather information from your Gmail and Calendar and compile it into an easily digestible briefing.
If an automatic briefing isn’t going deep enough, then Gemini Spark may be more your speed. Gemini Spark is a personal AI agent that runs 24/7 in the cloud that can answer questions, perform tasks and more.
Google says it needs access to your Gmail, Docs, Slides and more, but it will be able to do recurring tasks, like peruse your credit card statement each month and flag new charges, complete common workflows including generating meeting notes or learn new skills to help with deadlines, or just dreary day-to-day tasks you don’t want to deal with.
Google says they’re launching today with integration with Canva, OpenTable and Instacart and more but they’ll be connecting in partners to expand what Gemini Spark can do soon.
Spark could also be acting for you including texting and emailing, as well as operating your local browser and even creating custom sub-agents to get things done.
