A month ago, Ring announced that they were bringing 2K resolution to some of their security cameras and as of late last week it is now here.
Interestingly, you don’t need to buy new cameras if you have the supported cameras — which begs the question, if the Ring cameras always had this capability, why did it take Ring so long to enable it? The supported cameras are the Floodlight Cam Wired Pro and the Spotlight Cam Pro (battery and wired now apparently).
The upgrade was started arriving on January 8 but due to the phased roll out didn’t land on my devices until last week. It is simple to upgrade your resolution to 2K — open up your Ring app. Open up the settings for the relevant Ring camera, Select Device Settings, then Video Settings, scroll down to the bottom and select Video Quality. From this menu select 2K.
Take note that streaming in 2K will use more data and it may also affect your network speed.
I have a Floodlight Cam Wired Pro and the video resolution change worked well. I also have a Spotlight Cam Pro Battery so was able to upgrade that camera to 2K as well.
If you have one of these two supported cameras head into your Ring app now and upgrade your video resolution to 2K. Ring has promised to introduce new features to cameras “when they are ready to deliver the best end-to-end customer experience.”
In the meantime, I’d like to see them release more cameras that support 2K recording but there is a fine tightrope between Wi-Fi data consumption, battery life, and streaming performance that they have to navigate so we will wait and see where it can be implemented in the future.
