When it comes to hair styling products, Trev has never even touched a hairdryer, and his brush is one of those crappy plastic $2 ones from Woolies (a complete waste of time!). So when he received a Dyson Supersonic r hair dryer to review, there was really no other option but for us, his wife and daughter to step in. We are definitely the ones with more, I mean, better hair.
I am probably the only person on earth who doesn’t like a Dyson vacuum. I just don’t think they are made for Australian conditions and I am still yet to find one which can pick up a gum leaf. So while I am so-so on their vacuums, I am the opposite on their hair care range, they are literally the BOMB. I have had the Dyson Corrale straightener and the Dyson Supersonic for years and I love them both. In fact, on a recent overseas holiday I looked into hiring both of them because the thought of going two weeks without them was almost unbearable. I didn’t hire them, and I still regret it (and if you saw the photos of my hair by the end of the trip you would agree!).
The biggest selling feature in my opinion is their power as well as the way they make my hair look, drying your hair is done in minutes and it is so much quieter than any hair dryer I have owned before. While having a cordless straightener just makes things easier. No more getting tangled in cords, being able to do two things at once, cordless is just better. Also if you have kids or husbands that use a straightener, everyone can just grab it and use it where they want. For the record, Trev is not one of those husbands.

So to be honest, I didn’t want anything new because I loved these two products, why would I want to change? But Trev tells me product reviews is what we do, so here we go….
Dyson Supersonic r hair dryer is as fancy as the name suggests. It is a strange and let’s face it, ugly unit and at first I was a bit unsure, but it didn’t take long to get the direction right and it is noticeably lighter. In fact it is 30% smaller and 20% lighter according to Dyson. They don’t share any data on how loud it is but it definitely seemed quieter and more powerful than the original. Both Victoria, who has a lot of hair, and myself who has finer hair, can dry a full head of hair so quickly and easily.
Victoria loves the RFID sensors which remembers the last used setting on every attachment.

While I love how the attachments work. The flyaway attachment is insane. It makes my hair so smooth, I look like I have been at the hairdresser. According to Dyson there is a 46% reduction in fizz, I have no idea how you can measure that, but I can 100% confirm it reduced my frizz. Now I will note that all the the Dyson hair dryers seem to now be able to support this attachment so I am heading out to buy it for my original!
I also felt like I could get my hair straighter with the pro concentrator than I could with the regular Supersonic. According to Dyson over 100 pros tested the Supersonic r hair dryer and 90% agreed it achieves a salon finish, controls flyaways, reduces frizz and enhances curl definition.
Trev will back me up that I shed hair like a dog! However, I do truly believe, that my hair is thicker since I switched to Dyson products. The Dyson Supersonic r as with many of the Dyson haircare products, includes intelligent heat control which they say “ensures no heat damage to protect hair’s natural shine”. Since switching to Dyson I am noticing less heat damage to the front of my hair and my hairdresser has noticed my hair getting thicker, is it the Dyson or is it something else? I dunno but I haven’t actively changed anything else.

One weird negative, is that in order to take the weight out of the hair dryer they have made the plug into the wall HUGE. Like bigger than any electrical appliance I have ever seen. So please check the size and the layout of your bathroom because if you have a plug inside the shaving cabinet or a plug not easily accessible you may need some sort of extension cord, just worth noting.
The other thing I would point out, is they only have a 2 year warranty which for a product in this price range seems a bit short. Both my straightener and hair dryer did die about 6 months ago, and I had to pay for the straightener to be repaired. It was $200, and I thought that was pretty expensive for a repair, but I did get a 1 year guarantee and cheaper than the $600 to buy a new one. It took two weeks and they shipped it back to me and it has been perfect ever since. The hair dryer they were able to fix for free in the shop. But like I said I have had these products for more than 4 years but I do believe it is something to consider.
Now at $800 the Dyson Supersonic r hair dryer is eye-wateringly expensive. So it really is an investment or a really nice birthday present! But if you are after salon quality at home, I do think this does the job. You could get away with just this product and not needing a hair straightener, so you can save a little there too. Girl maths?
But if you have the money and you are happy to spend it, I think the only person disappointed could be your hairdresser when you don’t book as many blow outs.
My tip: If this is completely out of your price range, take a look at the original Supersonic because at half the price, it is still an amazing product and you will be very happy!

Trev’s wife. Loves pretty things but hates gadgets (it’s a match made in heaven). Mum to three kids who break her pretty things but she loves them anyway.
