After leaking for the past few weeks, LG has overnight taken the wraps off their new concept phone, the LG Wing. As we saw in the leaks, the phone has a display which can swivel into a T-shape to reveal a smaller second display.

The phone is part of their ‘Explorer Project’ which will show off innovations in their mobile products.

LG says the new design will help with multi-tasking, and they’ve included software tweaks, such as letting you create shortcuts for apps in pairs which you’d normally use together, video and chatting, navigation and phone calls and more. There’s even specific combos LG has worked with partners on, including when using ‘YouTube or Tubi on the preinstalled NAVER Whale browser, the video plays on the Main Screen while the Second Screen displays comments or the search bar’.

The swivel design has seen LG put their engineering nous to work, with the company including a Hydraulic Damper on the swivelling mechanism which locks into place. There’s also a Thermoplastic polyoxymethylene coating to ensure the display swivels smoothly, and doesn’t scratch the secondary display.

On the hardware front you have a LG packed in a main 6.8-inch 1080p resolution Plastic-OLED display (that includes a fingerprint display) which swivels 90 degrees to show off the smaller 3.9-inch OLED. Powering the phone is the Snapdragon 765G processor with 5G that we saw in the LG Velvet, but there’s 8GB RAM, and either 128GB or 256GB storage depending on what LG launch here. Powering it all is a 4000mAh battery which can be charged wirelessly, or with the included fast charger.

There’s a triple rear camera array that includes a 64MP sensor, plus a 13MP ultra-wide, as well as another ultra-wide 12MP sensor with “Big Pixel”. LG has gotten around the notch in the display for the selfie camera by making the 32MP front-facing camera pop-up.

There’s even a gimbal mode which lets you use the second display as a convenient grip, which uses 6 motion sensors in the phone to dampen movement in your video as you walk along.

In terms of availability, LG says they’ll be launching the LG WING in South Korea initially before heading to North America and Europe. We’ve asked LG Australia if they’re bringing the phone here and they advised ‘Ranging of LG WING has yet to be determined for the Australian market, we will advise once more information is available.
