Around this time of year we see all the streaming services offer their year in reviews for users and they are very personalised but Google’s Year in Search is about everyone and what were the most popular search terms for the year.

This year Google Search trends were a lot about us understanding the world around us, both national and international, with the Voice Referendum taking centre stage and alongside it the Israel and Palestine war and the earthquake in Melbourne.

Aussies unable to get information from Optus regarding their massive failure with the outage this year had to turn to Search to try to find out more (you should have just come to EFTM, Trevor was all over it).  This was the top news event in Search for the year.

The Matildas captured a lot of attention this year in the media and it seems it was fairly central in our minds with ‘Tillys search madness.  Sam Kerr and Mary Fowler were the two top-trending Aussies (from any vocation) with “How to watch the Women’s World Cup” the top trending question of the year.  Other top sports searches included the Cricket Wrold Cup and the Ashes.

As usual there were a lot of food searches (aside from my own “How to cook the perfect steak and bearnaise sauce”) with many about brand new dishes such as the Grimace Shake and the “Marry me Chicken.”

Movie and entertainment-wise, Aussies were crazy for the Barbie and Oppenheimer movies in Search with Oppenheimer topping that chart.  Swifties were all over Google Search with the announcement and ticket sales for Taylor Swift’s upcoming The Eras Tour with how to get tickets for it the number three in trending entertainment Searches.
