The end of rego stickers in some ways was long overdue, but there are people out there that still miss the physical reminder that was once plastered to the windscreen. As a short case study take mother Jenny Hardman for example.

She was pulled over by the police while returning from a family holiday. Guess what? The car had been unregistered for more than 6 months. Jenny also had her 18-month-old with her but luckily the police took pity on her and allowed her to drive to the nearest RMS to have the vehicles registration renewed. This was after more than $1700 in fines however.

She had missed the renewal notice in the mail due to a change of address. Now of course the onus is always on the owner to keep such details up to date, but hey none of us are perfect.

Jenny won’t have to worry about this again thanks to a new app called GetReminded. The app is not just a service to remind you about the due date of your car’s registration but any bill as a matter of fact.

“Many people are caught in a financial fog – not knowing when contracts expire for essential services like electricity, phone and the internet, resulting in overpayment,” said Silje Dreyer, co-founder of GetReminded”.

“On average families spend $14,000 a year on mobile phones, car registration and insurances, electricity/gas and internet/streaming tv services,” said Ms Dreyer.

“This could be slashed by thousands of dollars a year by simply knowing when your service contracts expire – knowing what you are paying and how long for.”

“On average people are saving $433 a year on their electricity bills by switching providers when their contracts end. While others are asking their current provider for a better deal and getting it.”

“Many mobile phone users are paying for handsets they already own after their bundled contract for handset and network service expires and they continue to pay the same amount, when they could be saving as much as $50 a month.”

“People often only get one notice in the mail about their car insurance and registration which they ignore until the last minute leaving it too late to shop around for a better insurance deal.”

“There are so many competitive offers it’s crazy people don’t shop around. Many just keep paying the same high rate and renew at the last minute.”

GetReminded is a free app and available for iOS and Android smartphones.
