While the big tech trade shows are places we would normally get to glimse some new or exciting concepts, that’s not been possible in this COVID world. So when the rare opportunity to get hands on with such a concept here on home soil in Australia we jumped at it – the amazing Oppo X 2021 Rollable Smartphone

Samsung already has in market some impressive future focussed Smartphone models with the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Flip. But those folding form factors are just the first of what will be a huge amount of concepts using the bendable display technology being used today.

Oppo are Australia’s third biggest mobile phone brand if you go by recent Kantar data which is based on surveys of mobile users, and no matter which way you look at it, under the local leadership of Michael Tran the brand has grown from strength to strength with important retail partnerships.

Last years Find X2 Pro was a fine example that Oppo can play in the flagship smartphone market, and now with this stunning Oppo X 2021 Rollable Smartphone concept – proof that Oppo is ready and willing to take on the future phone market.

The Oppo X 2021 Rollable Smartphone is a concept phone with a rollable display. There’s a swipe gesture recognised on the side power button that allows you to expand or contract the width of the device.

It’s like strange magic that appears in front of you and you can feel in your hand. A fascinating feeling frankly.

Its a slow expansion, but not so slow that you don’t notice it happening in real-time.

As it is when the Oppo X 2021 Rollable Smartphone is in “Smartphone Mode” this is a big phone, with a 6.7 inch display, rather thick and has some solid weight to it – but frankly, not more cumbersome than the Galaxy Z Fold models are.

Expanded with the flick of your finger on the power button, it becomes a 7.4 inch display.

While the display rolls out from seemingly no-where, around the back the hard back splits open on an angle for effect, and it looks stunning in both modes.

Oppo say the Oppo X 2021 Rollable Smartphone has a custom developed roll motor powertrain with two in-built motors pushing a constant force on the display, distributing the force across the screen so there’s no sudden change in the screen.

It then rolls around a 6.8mm diameter central axis which engineers believe is the perfect shape to ensure no visible traces or creases on the screen.

The whole thing is majestic, a sight to behold. Practical? I’m not sure. But I want one 🙂

No doubt the Oppo X 2021 Rollable Smartphone is very much a concept, with our time spent constantly opening and shutting the thing, we did hit some snags and the swipe button wasn’t responsive every time, but again – it’s not a production device.

No word on if or when this concept comes to market – we’ll have to wait and see.
