The fun that was the LEGO Mario set when it launched is now taking another step up with fun for more than just one kid at a time. A new LEGO Luigi interactive Figure is coming to the LEGO Super Mario universe along with some awesome new kits.

What makes the LEGO Mario gear so much fun isn’t just the building of the original kit. It’s the completely open world approach you can take to actually playing with the Lego you have.

While the kits are impressive, they all include tiny barcode tiles and specific colours to allow the interactive characters to “see” where you are stepping them. Place a start and finish piece, then build any combination of pathway you like for players to compete, with the interactive character itself scoring each round on the tiny screen on its chest.

You build the original sets using instructions on an iPad, but you never need to use a screen again, or you can use the Screen to keep a leaderboard and follow along with the progress.

Adding the new LEGO Luigi figure doesn’t just give you a different character to play with, it allows a two player approach to the game.

Simon Kent, Creative genius at LEGO is pumped for the launch “For us it’s all about encouraging continuous creative rebuilding and extended playtime. With today’s announcement, we’re not only bringing LEGO Mario and LEGO Luigi, their friends and enemies to life in new interactive ways for endless fun, we’re also thrilled to expand their play experience and the LEGO Super Mario universe with even more new sets and characters, something we really hope will excite fans”,

The two player functionality kicks in from August 1, opening the door for some family fun around the LEGO table.

And it’s not just Luigi. There’s new expansion sets and power-up packs too.

Bower’s Airship is probably the coolest part of the whole LEGO Super Mario universe we’ve seen. While Bower’s Castle got the kids eye at the first launch this ship is a cracker. Looks compact when built, but it pulls open to reveal not only a full sized tall-ship, but more interactive features.

There’s also Frog Mario and Bee Mario power-up packs, a Boss Sumo Bro Topple Tower Expansion Set, and character packs.

Get your kids excited – they all launch August 1.
