Matt Groening reveals the real location of Springfield in The Simpsons!

Ever since the famous yellow family came to life, creator Matt Groening has been fighting off the constant question of “where is Springfield located in reality?”. He’s finally answered that question. Brace yourself! The location of Springfield is…

Eugene, Portland, Oregan, US of A. Well, that’s what it is based on anyway. Groening told Smithsonian Magazine, “Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon. The only reason is that when I was a kid, the TV show “Father Knows Best” took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown. When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name. I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U.S. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, “This will be cool; everyone will think it’s their Springfield.” And they do.”

The interview wasn’t actually about the location of Springfield but The Simpsons in general. You can read the entire interview by clicking the link above.

Gadget site Gizmodo, which EFTM editor Nick Broughall turned into a massive pop-culture gadget blog in Australia (if we do say so ourselves), went one step further by actually doing a comparison of some of the famous locations in Springfield against some of the locations in Springfield. You be the judge. The images can be found here. Our two cents? There could be something to it…
