What movies and shows did Aussies watch last year?

Many of us spent far too much time in front of the idiot box last year, with many of use signing up for even more streaming services and checking out a wide range of shows. The  Australian Home Entertainment Distributors Association (AHEDA) has today revealed the most-watched and best-selling movie and television titles for 2020.

If you were like me you consumed your shows from a variety of sources and AHEDA confirmed that with sources widely in use included Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, Foxtel Store, YouTube, Telstra Box Office and Fetch. They also expect this trend of an increase in streaming services to continue in the future.

The top lists may be a bit of a surprise but also serve to remind us of show we intended to watch but never got around to it. You may also have started a series but never got to the end of it (I know I did several times) and this may serve a way to remind you to go and finish said series. The top selling movie for the year was Jumanji: The Next Level with Outlander the most watched series (and the inspiration for my dog Fraser’s name).

With the pandemic far from over it is likely our home consumption of movies and shows will continue to dominate our viewing preferences. It is definitely interesting that COVID-19 has changed our lives forever in so many ways and included in that is our viewing habits.

Survey after survey is noting changes in our viewing over the past year which is unsurprising but time will tell if it continues into the future. There is nothing like the full theatre experience– including the popcorn — and it’s unlikely that experience will be superseded any time soon. In the meantime though why not check out one of the Australian produced movies and help support Australian artists.
